Underwater Photography Tips

  1. Be comfortable as a diver first.  Don’t add a camera and gear to the mix while you are first learning to dive.
  2. Research the marine life you will be seeing so you can identify them and know whether they are safe to approach.
  3. Decide on what type of camera fulfills your needs as a photographer – SLR or gopro??
  4. Learn and be confident in basic camera terms and settings. In general you will want:
    • ISO Low
    • white balance to daylight
    • f – stop set mid range
    • high shutter speed
  5. Learn to recognize and employ the rules of picture composition.
  6. Use available light whenever possible.
  7. Move in closer – zooming in tends to degrade the picture quality.
